Caring till it hurts

A recent article in ‘Your Weekend’ (March 13, 2010) explored the topic of ‘compassion fatigue’. Doctors, nurses, counselors, helpers and volunteers – everyone is at risk, if they don’t make the time for self-care. Anxiety, sleeplessness, irritability and physical aches and pains can be an alarm signal. “When you are constantly giving out to someone else, you become emotionally exhausted. Unless you are careful, you can be functioning on an empty tank”. Recognising one’s limits and asking for help are important first steps for self-care. “Look after your own candle – if it goes out, everyone sits in the dark”.
